  • Powerstiva's BP Swap

Hi guys, i just purchesed my first BP today. Its out of a 91' Escort GT. I paid 175 for it, and it did not come with a wiring harness. I also got a starter motor with it. This is going to be my rebuild thread for the engine as well as by build thread for my 92' Festiva GL (Farrah is her name).

Right now its sitting in the back of my dads truck because i do not have a hoist so this is where i start.. with nothing but an engine and little knowledge of what to do.

My friends have agreed to help me out this summer with the build. There is a total of six of us that are gonna work on it. One of us (Shawn) has rebuilt a few mustangs, and another (Jack) works with his dad on alot of vehicles. Andrew knows a little about engines as well as myself. Jim and Eric are going to be working on bodywork along with Jack every once in awhile.

So my first question is what else do i need? I know that i need...
Wiring harness (Does it have to be from an egt?)
Transmission (I might be geting one form stainless1911)
    CV Shafts (From egt?)
Intermediate Shaft (From XR2 or 323gt only?)
And a chain hoist... i need that first but dont know where to get one

    Am i missing anything?

I will post pictures as soon as i get it out of the truck...

The wiring is plug and play. My festy still has the stock harness and I have a 94 egt bp. Just add the 1 wire for the distributor. You can use the stock b3 motor mount also if you space the whole bracket 1 inch from the block.

You'll want to use as much b3 stuff as you can. Thermostat housing. Water inlet (the one that bolts to the water pump). This way you can use stock hoses and radiator.

I had to swap out the BP's serpentine crank pulley for the one from my B3. I fab'ed my own no-weld motor mount from an old Festy trans mount & some angle iron & a few bolts. Also consider you may have to move your battery (possibly to passenger side) and/or shorten the BP's air intake tube. Some have also swapped in the dual-core radiator from an ATX Festy, but others claim there's not really a need. I'm still not decided on that one.

Definitely study mattswabb's BP Swap thread, if you haven't already.

I know this is a dumb question, and i think i know the answer but just to make sure.... Does the ECU need to come from the same style of car as the engine was pulled off or just any BP?

I was just looking at it some more and the block has " 2 BP" on it does that mean its second gen? and the exaust mani has "BP05" on it what is that stating? Also how do i know what intake mani i have, will the regular stock one fit in with out cutting/bashing int the firewall?

I believe you need an ECU from a manual transaxle car. Escort GT ATXs had some electronic controls, unlike Festiva ATXs. All Festivas should take two plug ECUs, and three wire throttle bodies. As far as I know, this goes for all engine swaps into either MTX or ATX Festivas.

Now if someone does an electronically contolled 4 speed ATX swap, this would undoubtedly change.

After looking at my engine for awhile today and along with the other opinons of my friends and a father. I have decided to olnly work on the top-end, we will do a valve job (To what extent i dont know) as well as porting and polishing the head. How much should a pay a machine shop to do this?

Camera was stollen by gremmlins so no pictures yet, i have started a quest to retrive it from the netherlands. ill be back with an update later this week.

I was debating it for awhile with my car, after some research, I figure it's overrated and not worth the time/money vs power gain. Get a turbo and forget that. Port matching is a viable cheap option tho.

They charge an arm and a leg, and unless it's somebody that has done alot of porting and polishing, and knows their way around a flow bench, there's more chance of making it worse than better.

Well since my last update the head has been opened up and it doesnt look too bad, only thing wrong is that when the PO installed the timing belt wrong *facepalm* and tried to start it he bent an exhaust valve. It wasnt too bad, im just wondering that if we trued the valve would it be acceptable to use? or should i just buy a new one? Also I am in the process of getting a manual tranny from a 91 festiva and im just double checking that i need to get the intermediate shaft from a Capri XR2 or from a 323GT since i am doing a BP swap? Thanks for any help guys!

Id just but a new valve. If you dont get it perfect, it'll wear the guide, and even if you do, it'll have a weak spot from stress.

Not sure how the valve could bend because of an incorrectly installed timing belt... the BP is a non-interference engine.
