  • Car hesitates and runs badly. Kia Pride

Hello, hope you can help me.

    My car is getting worse…

At first I just noticed that sometimes when I was about to accelerate between gears that it sometimes took a couple of seconds before it responded when the pedal was pressed.

BUT itīs getting worse. Now the car bearly is driveble. At idle it is not consistent, goes between 500-1000 rpm. Can also stall. But always start. Its sometimes hesitate when accelerating, more now then before. It feels like its getting to much fuel or too little.

Only att full trottle the car runs quite ok. But it is hard to drive with full trottle. =)

What can this be? I have change the sparks, they were quite ”black”. Runs fat I guess?

Have changed the fuelfilter, but is still the same. Has put injection cleaner in, but I think the car runs worse now.

I will try to read the error code, later this weak.

The car is a Kia Pride 2000 1.3 liter (B3) with fuelinjection, but I donīt think it's a EFI. The fuelinjection I think is a Mitsubishi system.

The distributor cap looks ok and has been cleaned. And If a pull sparkplugs cable it runs even worse.

Can this be the O2 sensor that is broke? It runs quite ok with full trottle, perhaps that is the signal the fuelinjection gets? A broke O2 sensor gives the message that very much air is passing??

    I really appriciate help.

you car is EFI, and your TPS (throtle position sensor) is located at your throtle body (between intake tube and manifold).
        Trees aren't kind to me...

        currently: 2 88Ls (Scrappy and Jersey), 88LX, 90L(Pepe), 91L, 91GL (Skippy) 93 GL Sport (the Mighty Favakk), 94 (Bruce) & 95 Aspire SEs, 97 Aspire (The Joker),
94 Justy 4WD, 87 Fiero GT, plus 2 parts cars. That's my fleet.

Ok, thanks. I will look into it. How do I know if that sensor is ok? I will read the repair manual for the festiva, hopefully it covers this?

In my instructionbook is says that the engine is a B3 EGI, but if your shore its a EFI it is good, then I can test the distributor cap as the Sticky suggest.

Do you know how can I tell thatīs its a EFI?

          Thanks for your help

            Error code diagnosis

Now I have checkt error code and the led flashes 1 long paus 3 short paus 1 long 3 short and so on.

I guess this means that I have error code 3 or 13?

            Hmm, wonder what this means?

thats a code 13.... and my haynes manual doesn't have what error code that is for EFI.

code 12 in the haynes Festiva manual is the TPS.

Your car may be carbureted... do you have a 1 foot diameter saucer on the top of the engine?
code 13 for carbureted is a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor or circuit

I am quite shoure that it is fuel injection on this car.. =) Havent found any carburator.

So 13 is only possible on carbureted cars? That explain why I canīt se 13 on this page:

Thats weird, hmm. Perhaps I am missreading the code somehow.

I tried reseting and after that I got no errorcode after just starting it upp in idle. Then I took a little trip and I had problems getting back to my parkingplace. Runs atleast in idle but just as I am about to move it doesnt have the power and stalls.
After the little trip I then got the same errorcode again.

Am I somehow missreading and it should be a 3. In that case it would be Distributor G Signal. Replacing the distributor would fix that problem I guess?

describe again how the Check engine light flashes...

if it is JUST 3 short flashes.... thats the code 3... if it goes BLINK (pause) BLINK BLINK BLINK.... then thats 13....

code 3 is CMP Camshaft position sensor for years 1994 and later. that would be distributor related.

                    From start:

                    LONG CONTINOUS FLASH (3sek)
                    Then
                    BLINK----SHORTBLINK--SHORTBLINK--SHORTBLINK

                    BLINK----SHORTBLINK--SHORTBLINK--SHORTBLINK

                    AND SO on.

                    So I also read 13.

"This Relates to Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor or circuit"

Isnt there any MAP on fueled injection car or where can I locate it?

Perhaps that Carbureted function still exist on newer cars but the connection has been corroded or something. Where is the "data" box on these cars?

                    Thanks for your help.

its the sensor in the air flow box on the passenger side of the engine..

Ok, I will check it. Dont know how though.

Do anyone know how I can find out if the sensor is broken, or should I just try to get a replacementpart and replace it?

Would be nice to be able to check resistance or something before I buy a new sensor. I guess they are quite expensive. Here in Sweden parts are expensive compared to av Volvo.

take the sensor out and clean it with electrical contact cleaner.... that may help. worst case would be it needs replaced.
