      dear john, a CD4E....X(

      the Mercury Mistake...

I've hated those cars since the first one I PDI'd (pre delivery inspected). Then catalytic converter recalls, fuel tank recalls, wiring harness recalls and ONPs, crappy rotors and drums and bearings and batteries and switches and relays and... oh yeah, water pumps, fuel pumps, O2 sensors, alternators, ABS modules, and oh yeah, TRANSMISSIONS!!!

Those are good cars. Y'all must have bought limons or a first gen lol. I have a 98 svt contour. Pretty much same car. But mine has a 3l motor swap dynotuned. The atx does blow tho

Hope it treats you well, but there is a reason anybody that ever worked in a shop calls them a Mercury Mistake

I know all about the problems it can serve me. I've got a buddy that is VERY good with knowing his stuff when it comes to these cars, he is going to help me with the 5spd swap, and I might possibly throw a 3L in it at the same time. The worst is the 4cyl models, those suck haha, along with the auto tranny, even worse! I'm more than happy with this car, and I'm sure it will treat me well! This one has 4 wheel disc brakes, and no rust!

I was a Ford tech for quite a few years. I worked on those from the day they came out to the day the stopped production. I was also an SVT and Saleen certified tech. The SE (v6 and 5spd) cars were fun to drive, but they were all miserable to work on. The 4cyl auto cars were the worst, absolutely. The early cars used to shake the steering wheel VIOLENTLY when at a stop in drive. We changed engine and trans mounts, remounted the subframe and exhaust, and put a 5lb weight in the steering wheel behind the airbag. Nothing got rid of that shake! The SVTs were better, because they had a separate quality control team. Plus, they had gotten most of the bugs worked out by '98. I still didn't like working on them...

I've owned mine for 7 years no problems like the ones stated. But then again I think he was talking about first gen which was horrible. Hey do you need a svt ecu or injectors intake gauge cluster?

Are you sure thats the cd4e batavia tranny? It's a v6, and I thought the junk auto cd4e's were only on the 4 cylinders like my 99 626.

Well the auto is coming out soon enough haha, I'm lucky that this one still works! My buddy bought one with only 50,000 miles on it that the tranny was out already! The only SVT that I'm putting in this car so far is possibly leather seats, I want a set of tan leather seats, is there any difference in the SVT gauge cluster other than it saying SVT on it?

One of my biggest regrets was getting rid of my SVT Contour, that car was so beautiful. THey're hard as heck to find too, especially the black with midnight blue interior.

There's a black svt in my junk yard. Black with tan leather. Extremely rare to see them in the yard. The svt ecu will net you more power over stock. The svt clust is white face gauge an has a 160 mph speedo vs 130
