  • twin carb conversion

My carbs came from the Ford KB laser, sold in Australia. It was fitted on the Mazda E5 engine. Here is one currently listed on eBay:

Here are some pics once this listing is finished:

Since the E5 ports are slightly wider on than on the B6, an aluminum adapter plate had to be made in order to route the air and fluid. You will need a piece about 1" X 3.5" X 13"

I had to modify the location of the center bolt hole of laser manifold to bolt to the B6 cylinder head.

Here is what I started with:

I bought a couple of plastic 6mm wing nuts, although the steel Geo wing nut holdown could be used instead:

In my next installment, I will discuss the intake gasket modification I made and why.

    Cheers.

              E5 gaskets

Thanks FestBoy and good luck with your install.

              GASKETS

The stock E5 gasket comes with the rear coolant port missing (and the fuel pump gasket is integral.
This is to force all of the engine coolant to flow through only the front coolant port.
One of the intake manifolds exhibited severe erosion around the blocked hole.
Also the rear coolant port is smaller than the front port. Because of this, I punched a 3/4" hole in the E5 gasket with my eBay hole punch kit.

The fuel pump gasket needs to be cut off. It is obviously on a different plane than the adapter.

Here is a picture of both the B6 and E5 gaskets:

Here is a picture of them stacked up:

              closeups:

Here is a picture of how they fit the adapter:

You need longer studs in your cylinder head to allow for the thickness of the adapter.
I used the double nut method to try and get the stock ones out. When that failed, I resorted to the pipe wrench method.
              No problem.

              AIR CLEANER FILTERS

The air cleaner had to have the air breather replaced:

Just cut it to size. I spent $1.50 on this!

I have my air filters now. More on the way from Down Under.
Even though you can win them for a buck on eBay, shipping is $15!

                  twin choke and ???

                  My pleasure, 25Horseplay.

                  Twin Choke

Every twin carb setup needs to have a twin choke cable.
This is the stock E5 choke.

You will notice it has an electrical connector.
When it is pushed in completely and the choke is off. The light will go out.
Otherwise, the choke light is on.
                  What choke light?
I bought an old Datsun choke light off of the bay.
Because it is sized to fit the double hole in the instrument cluster trim.

Here's a picture of showing where the choke connects.

The cylindrical ends are a must, they pull in an identical fashion, just like the throttle cable.
                  ______________________________________________

unknown electrical connection on rear carb

I do not know what this is for, but the carb rebuilder simply cut the wires off!
I believe it has something to do with fuel pressure. There is a sliding plunger in the passageway. I won't really know for sure until I read the shop manual. There is a ordinary plug on the front carb, in the same spot.

                  Any guesses?

                    the unknown electrical connection:

                    Fuel Cut Solenoid

It needs to have 12v+ applied to it for fuel to flow from the bowl into the idle passages.

In vehicles with a computer controlled carburator, the computer would close (turn off) the solenoid when the throttle was closed, but the RPM was above 800-1000RPM. This is to limit HC emissions during deceleration. The solenoid closes when the key is turned off to prevent run-on, or 'dieseling'.

                      you are right.

                      Slow Fuel Cut Solenoid
Purpose: As the name says it cuts fuel during deceleration or when the ignition is turned off. This helps fuel economy, reduces chances of poping noises from exhaust, and prevents dieseling when the key is turned off and the engine is hot. If this solenoid is stuck or not getting proper electrical connection the engine might not start unless the gas is pumped several times or it may not start at all, once started it may only run for a few seconds. It is located between Accelerator pump lever and choke. If stuck open the truck may smell rich when letting off the gas, make poping from the exhaust, or start getting clogged cats. When the computer goes into limp mode this solenoid is turned off and defaults to open.

                      Thanks again FB71.

                      No computer.
I will pull out the needle plunger and replace it with a simple plug immediately.
                      Hello popping noises.
                      Bye Bye cat.
                      Hello test tube.

                        you're very welcome!

I did the same on my '88L, when the solenoid went bad!

                          clearance

I checked the clearance for the air cleaner tonight. It clears the firewall fine. It just clears the AC relays on the right firewall. It just clears the power steering high pressure line. The hold down tab on the snorkel touches the top of the valve cover perfectly. Unfortunately, there is no hole or meat where it touches in between the ribs. A little aluminum weld, shallow drill and tap will be required.

Also, the air supply tube for PCV in is on the opposite side of the B6 compared to the E5.
I will look around the JY for a substitute and report back. The vacuum source for the power brake booster, does not need the long tube from the 89 carbed model. I will replace it with the shorter one from the FI model.

Hood clearance is not an issue at all. The snorkel perfectly follows the slope of the hood.

                          More to come..
