does anyone have these with the smooth non ribbed tail light? Everytime i come across a set that are "cleared" they are the ribbed kind. I have been looking for smooth and wanted to know if anyone has some or have seen them.

Yeah, every set I've seen like that are ribbed, might be tough to find.

I wonder if there is something different about the smooth tail lights? I've got 'em on my 88 and they are as yellow as new, and since all the clears we've seen are the ribbed style....

DJ had looked into this - If you do enough searching you could find the original thread. But to summerize -

The pigment in some of the ribbed lights fades with UV exposure - There is no known way to identify a specific year or manufacture run as they've been seen on all years of later models.

DJ had attempted to recreate this with less then impressive results.
            What he learned:
You can "boil" the lenses to remove them from the housing (this method is the best method he found to remove as it makes the glue plyable so that you can pry on the lens with out breaking it)
-> I've tried this method and it indeed works - one thing you have to watch though is keep you water right at just before boiling temp - dont let it get higher as you will "blanch" your amber lens and it will remain "milky" looking the rest of its life

What he did was placed the lenses under a UV lamp (more comonly know as "Grow Lamps") You can pick these up from a green house supply store - just don't buy more than one or they will suspect your growing dope and put a report in to have you checked on.

The issue with this process was the following:
a)The lamp gets hot and can warp and melt the lens if its too close
b)the amount of hours required to get any sort of result is extreamely high and can take years to get a full clear by the calculations he did.

you could always remove the Amber lens by that method and have a clear made - ask DamKid how he made his clear lenses
